What Is Specialized Kinesiology

Specialized Kinesiology is a specialty within Chiropractic. It is similar to the medical model where they have general practitioners and specialists such as a Neurologists. Specialized Kinesiology can be used as a means of preventative health care as well as chronic care. It is a technique that allows the Central Nervous System to be targeted directly. It uses a specific technique called Neurological Organization Technique. This technique uses muscle testing to determine neurological organization of the Central Nervous System (Central Nervous System = brain, spinal cord and spinal nerves).

Neurological Organization is determined by using Muscle Testing, similar to the muscle testing preformed during a medical examination to determine neurological function (Hoppenfeld, Stanley: Physical examination of the spine and extremities; 1976 Appeton-Century-Crofts). The Specialized Kinesiologist uses muscle testing as a gauge to determine two things, 1) how the nervous system is functioning because, every muscle is attached to a nerve(s) and 2) according to Chinese Medicine (Acupuncture) specific muscles run along specific meridians (energy pathways) and these muscles can be tested to determine how those energy pathways are functioning. Those energy pathways (meridians) correlate with various organs tissues glands and system of your body.

The only difference between the muscle testing that is done in a medical exam or even a Chiropractic exam, and that done by a Specialized Kinesiologist is the medical doctor or Chiropractor is not checking for anything other than nerve or muscle function.

Neurological organization is the very thing that allows you to survive and to function under every possible situation. Your body has the ability to balance muscles front to back, side to side or when we sit or stand upright. It has reflexes for centering the head on your neck. You also have systems for fighting disease, healing and repair of damage done to your body. These are just some examples of what your nervous system does for you on a daily bases to keep you functioning.

Your body has an innate (pre-written program) intelligence that is designed to protect the Central Nervous System. All survival functions are designed to keep you functioning and above all to keep the brain functioning, at all cost. For example your body will not allow your brain to be starved of sugar (glucose) or go without oxygen. Your brain requires its supply of sugar even while you are sleeping. During sleep your body is removing glycogen (complex sugar) stored in your muscles and liver to feed its insatiable appetite. During a fasting state (dieting or something similar) your body will start to break down muscle proteins and change it into glucose to feed the brain. These are just some examples of your innate intelligence (pre-written programs) in action.

Your body has systems designed for the sole purpose of defending you from any harm such as fight or flight. In most cases this mechanisms will be turned off when the crisis is over. In some instances this mechanism is not turned off. This leads to a situation where your body becomes the target of its own defenses. This leads to symptoms that are not associated with a particular disease.

Everyone of us has all of the same defense mechanisms. We all have the same abilities to fight disease. The problem arises when the disease starts to over take the body’s defenses. The Central Nervous System will step up the battle and all of the body's defense mechanisms will be called upon and go into overtime to battle the menace. While the Central Nervous System is trying to combat the threat (disease, stress etc.) it must also monitor and keep in check how it is fighting the threat and still maintain all of your body’s every day functions. Your body handles every threat as if it were life or death. It doesn’t matter whether if your boss is yelling at you or you are being chased through the woods by a hungry bear that wants to have you as its lunch. Every time your nervous system defends you it is literally an all out war. Unfortunately in every war there are casualties on both sides. Some of those casualties are due to both sides fighting and some of them are due to friendly fire (you shot someone on your own team). In a very simple scenario this is what goes on within you, every time your body mounts up a defense against anything it perceives  as a danger. Occasionally you are the one who is the casualty of friendly fire. This occurs when the nervous system becomes overwhelmed  and looses track of what is going on and its defense mechanisms run awry and unchecked. This is what I refer to as a “fight or flight syndrome.”

There are specific techniques that I use that cause your body to turn off a “fight or flight syndrome” and promote neurological organization. This gives your body the chance to relax. It also takes the “stress” off your nervous system and allows your body to stop fighting itself and to allocate the resources to promote healing and repair. Disease only occurs when there is neurological disorganization.
